Where the unit goes

Most Washington units stand on private ground, typically a driveway or a fenced lot. The truck needs firm access within hose reach.

A porta potty or other unit on public space, including the street, sidewalk, tree space or parking, needs a District permit. See permits.

Permits and rules

Permits and city rules

The District's Public Space Committee hears applications for work that occupies a public street, sidewalk or lane. Submit the Certification of Notice at least one week before the hearing.

FAQs

Common questions

The Washington questions people raised most often, in order.

Do I need a permit for a porta potty?

DDOT's pages say a permit is needed to occupy, construct or install in public property between property lines, which includes roadways, tree space, sidewalks and parking. Apply online through d.TOPS, or in person at the Permitting Center at 1100 4th Street SW, 2nd floor, (202) 442-4670. The DDOT pages I read do not mention porta potties, so call DDOT at (202) 673-6813 to confirm whether one needs a permit.

How do I schedule a pickup?

Phone (202) 921-4386 when the unit should be taken away, and we book the pickup. We call the hauler about any pickup that slips, the same business day.

How does billing work?

Washington rentals are billed at the quoted rate in 28-day periods for as long as the project lasts. Net 30 terms are available for qualified contractor accounts. Taxes and any extra service are listed on the quote.

How fast can you deliver a porta potty?

Nearly half of Washington-area orders last year, 49%, were delivered within a day of booking. For a fixed-date event, plan a few days of notice.

How far ahead should I book for an event?

Washington orders split by timing: half came two days or less ahead, a quarter four or more days ahead. For May, June or October weekends, or the Marine Corps Marathon, book two weeks ahead.

Can I put a porta potty on my driveway?

Usually, yes. A driveway or side lot is a common spot in the suburbs, while city lots are tighter. The truck must reach the unit from your own drive, so tell us about narrow access when you order.

How often do you service the units?

Washington rentals are serviced weekly, with pumping, cleaning and restocking on every visit. Crews on heavy schedules can book a second weekly visit at a set fee.

Do you service on weekends?

Yes, for an extra charge. Weekend visits can be added to a Washington rental, and the price is listed on the quote.

Do porta potties work in winter?

Yes. About 60 nights a year in Washington reach freezing, so we treat each unit with antifreeze before the cold weather arrives.
