Minimum toilet ratios (29 CFR 1926.51)
For crews of 20 or fewer: 1 toilet. From 21–200 workers: 1 toilet plus 1 urinal per 40 workers. Above 200 workers: 1 toilet per 50 workers and 1 urinal per 100 workers.
Keep your job site compliant and productive with coordinated sanitation, waste, and site infrastructure from a single vendor. We serve active construction projects in your area with monthly rentals, multi-unit pricing, and same-day delivery when routing allows.
Construction sanitation under 29 CFR 1926.51—minimum units, handwashing, access, and why weekly servicing matters for compliance.
For crews of 20 or fewer: 1 toilet. From 21–200 workers: 1 toilet plus 1 urinal per 40 workers. Above 200 workers: 1 toilet per 50 workers and 1 urinal per 100 workers.
Required counts are the legal OSHA minimum. For efficient operations—shorter lines, less downtime, and easier servicing—we recommend about 1 standard porta potty per 10 workers per week plus handwash stations (about 1 per 20 workers). Use both columns in the chart below when ordering.
Running water for handwashing is required when available. Hand sanitizer alone does not satisfy OSHA sanitation requirements—pair units with handwash stations on active job sites.
Facilities must be reachable within about 10 minutes of work areas. High-rise projects may need crane-hook or elevated placement—ground-floor units alone may not comply on upper floors.
A portion of portable restrooms on site should be ADA-accessible for workers and visitors. We supply ADA units with handrails and additional interior space.
OSHA does not count dirty or out-of-service toilets toward your minimum. Weekly pumping and cleaning keeps units in service and your site compliant.
Federal OSHA penalties increased in 2026. State plans such as Cal/OSHA continue tightening sanitation accessibility—plan adequate units before inspections or schedule delays.
Adequate sanitation supports worker health and productivity. Clean, serviced facilities help recruitment on tight labor markets for long-running projects.
Required counts meet OSHA minimums (toilets and urinals). Recommended counts reflect efficient operations—about 1 standard unit per 10 workers per week plus handwash stations. Add ADA units where required.
| Workers on site | Required (OSHA minimum) | Recommended (efficient operations) |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 toilet | 1–2 toilets + 1 handwash station |
| 21–40 | 1 toilet, up to 1 urinal | 3–4 toilets + 2 handwash stations |
| 41–60 | 1–2 toilets, 1 urinal | 5–6 toilets + 3 handwash stations |
| 61–80 | 2 toilets, 1–2 urinals | 7–8 toilets + 4 handwash stations |
| 81–100 | 2–3 toilets, 2 urinals | 9–10 toilets + 5 handwash stations |
| 101–120 | 3 toilets, 2–3 urinals | 11–12 toilets + 6 handwash stations |
| 121–200 | 3–5 toilets, 3–5 urinals | 13–20 toilets + 7–10 handwash stations |
| 201+ | 1 toilet per 50 workers, 1 urinal per 100 workers | 1 toilet per 10 workers + handwash stations (about 1 per 20 workers) |

Under 29 CFR 1926.51, job sites need enough toilets and urinals based on crew size—for example, 1 toilet for up to 20 workers, then additional toilets and urinals as crew size grows. Facilities must be sanitary, available, and within reasonable access of work areas. Weekly servicing helps keep units in compliance.
Use the chart on this page for both numbers: Required is the OSHA minimum under 29 CFR 1926.51 (toilets and urinals by crew size). Recommended is our planning guideline for efficient operations—about 1 standard unit per 10 workers per week, plus handwash stations (about 1 per 20 workers). Add ADA units where required and extra units when work areas are spread out.
No. When running water is available, OSHA expects proper handwashing facilities. Hand sanitizer is a supplement—portable handwash stations are the standard add-on for construction hygiene compliance.
No. Out-of-service or unsanitary units do not count. Weekly pumping, cleaning, and restocking keep units usable and toward your required minimum.
Standard units often run about $150–$250 per month including weekly servicing, depending on ZIP and site access. ADA, handwash add-ons, and multi-unit bundles are quoted separately on one line-item estimate.
